Obituary

Captain Julian William Riehl, Jr., U.S. Navy (ret), 88, passed away May 6, 2015.
Captain Riehl retired from the U.S. Navy after 32 years of active duty. His service included command of the USS GREAT SITKIN, an ammunition ship during the Viet Nam war. Upon his military retirement, he taught Computer Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, for 20 years. He was an accomplished water color artist, an avid reader, and a model train enthusiast. He was predeceased by his parents, Julian W. Riehl and Winona Smith Riehl; and a brother, Richard M. Riehl.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Mounie Riehl; nieces and nephews, Pamela Riehl Kelley (Daniel), Mark Richard Riehl (Lori), Kurt William Riehl, Gregory Carroll Riehl (Sandy), Scott Lawrence Riehl (Maureen), John Timothy Mounie (Lori), Michael William Mounie (Tracy), Christopher Allen Mounie (Melissa). Having no children of their own, he and Shirley were honorary grandparents to their many great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9th at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
