CHESAPEAKE—Betty Ann Houde Pennystone, 85, of Chesapeake, VA passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, with her loving and devoted daughter at her side. She was born on October 14, 1938, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Lionel Houde and Gladys Warren Houde.
Betty was graduated with the class of 1956 from St. Paul's High School and earned her Associate's degree from Tidewater Community College.
Betty was a devoted mother and grandmother. She unconditionally loved and dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren, striving to guide and protect them.
Betty maintained a close-knit group of friends whom she treasured. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Mildred Lloyd and Ethel Mae Lloyd; one brother, Lionel Arthur Houde, Jr; her niece Allyson; and nephew Brandon.
She is survived by her son, Steven Pennystone of Chesapeake; her daughter, Valerie Watkins (Charlie) of Norfolk; and her son, Eric Pennystone (Katie) of Gloucester; and her siblings: Tim Houde (Debbie) of Suffolk, Raymond W. Houde of Chesapeake, Jim Houde (Janie) of Herndon, Hank Houde (Ling) of Raleigh, NC, Darlene Houde Bayer of Suffolk, Michael "Tony" Houde of Suffolk, and Joni Houde Hazelette (Charlie) of Chesapeake. Betty was affectionately referred to as "Gram" by her grandchildren, Christian, Monty, Carly, Colby, and Madelyn Ann. Her surviving nephews and nieces lovingly referred to Betty as "B".
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High Street, Portsmouth. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High Street, Portsmouth. A reception will follow at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Ln., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor or your favorite charity. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
