Bert John Novonty, Jr., died peacefully on April 30, 2015.
Mr. Novotny was born in Brooklyn , N.Y., the son of the late Bert J. Novotny, Sr. and Jean Joswick Novotny. He worked for many years throughout Tidewater as a window display designer for some of the area's major retailers. He was the widower of Catherine Reagan "Kitty" Novotny since her death in 2009. Bert and Kitty were well known, both locally and regionally, for their Shag Dancing skills. They were members of the Myrtle Beach Shaggers Hall of Fame, the National Boppers Hall of Fame in Jacksonville, FL, the Virginia Shaggers Hall of Fame, and the Virginia National Living Legends for dancing.
Survivors include six children, Stan Majkut and wife Pam, Larry May and wife Carol, Colleen Dore and husband Steve, Jeannie Monk and husband John, Cathy Sharrett and husband Brian, and Bert J. Novotny III; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Assoc., 870 Greenbrier Circle #404, Chesapeake, VA 23320; or to a charity of choice.
