Obituary

Bernard J. Duffy, 91, of Hatton Point Lane, died Friday October 11, 2013. A longtime resident of Portsmouth and native of Chicago, IL, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the Naval Air Station after 37 years, as a leadingman mechanic. He then began working for the City of Portsmouth as an assessor for the Commissioner of the Revenue and retired after 10 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, the Elks Lodge #82, the American Legion Post #310 and the National Federation of Retired Government Employees (NARFE). He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Joice S. Duffy; father and mother, John T. and Frances Duffy and brothers, John Francis Duffy, Joseph Edward Duffy and Edward Patrick Duffy.

Survivors include his sister, Loretta D. Thomas of Portsmouth; adopted daughter Beryl Minghini of Snowshoe W.Va.; two nephews, Patrick J. Duffy and his wife Monica and Michael J. Duffy and his wife Francine all of Crown Point, IN. He is also survived by his wife's niece, Susan Harrell and husband Jimmy of Chesapeake; as well as other family members.

The family would like to thank his special caregiver, Dorothy (Sparkey) Winn for her care and devotion.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday October 15, 2013 in St. Paul's Catholic Church, 518 High Street, Portsmouth, VA, by the Rev. David W. Cupps. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA. A Christian wake service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday October 14, in Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High Street, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Restoration Fund, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA 23703. Condolences may be registered at bwfosterfuneralhome.com.
