MYERSVILLE, MD--Stuart Gunter, 80, peacefully left this world on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Brookdale Senior Living in Hagerstown, MD, surrounded by the love of her family and friends and the hospice staff of Washington County.

​Born Barbara Stuart Bennett on February 19, 1939 to Maurice Edward Bennet Jr. and Norma Gresham Kellam in Portsmouth, VA, Stuart was married to Julius F. Gunter and lived in Myersville, MD for over forty years.

​Stuart ("Don't call me Barbara") was a proper southern lady and finishing school graduate, a loving wife, mother and stepmother. A loyal democrat and decades-long Boy Scout volunteer and supporter, Stuart was a sensitive soul who cared about the world and loved her neighbors and friends dearly. A lover of flowers, nature, and old movies, Stuart always found time to cheer on her Washington Redskins and engage in good-hearted wagering with her dear friend Mark, an avid Eagles fan. In fact, Mark would like to remind Stuart that she still owes him two subs from last year, and he plans to collect when he sees her again.

Stuart was preceded in death by her husband Julius in 1992 and her son Maurice L. Gunter in 2003. She leaves behind dear cousins, Maury, Audrey, Maury Jr., Jenny, Bella and Finn; the Cookes of Portsmouth, VA; two step-sons, Julius A. Gunter of Crawford, WV and Edward F. Gunter of Orlando, FL; and a dear family of friends including Gene and Marlin Gaver and their daughters Marianne Abbs and Suzanne Levitt; Mark and Jennifer Whitmore; and neighbor Terry Nelson.

​A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth.  There will be a gathering after the service at the home of Audrey and Maury Cooke, 204 Swimming Point Walk.   A memorial celebration will be held August 10 at The Church of Transfiguration, in Braddock Heights, MD.
