Audrey Grace Howell Halstead, 87, passed away at her residence in Cedar Manor Assisted Living, Chesapeake, VA on October 20, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Audrey was born on April 26, 1927 in Matewan, WV to the late Thomas and Annabelle Howell. Her first marriage to Floyd Holbrook Sr. brought her to Portsmouth, VA in the 1950's where she lived, worked and raised her four children. Audrey held many positions throughout her working life, including Montgomery Ward Catalog department, Singer Sewing Machine, The Girl Scouts, Bank of Virginia and Virginia Chemicals Credit Union where she was affectionately known as the "Money Lady" by many who worked there and benefited from her money management advice and assistance.
Audrey is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Vernon E. Halstead of Chesapeake, VA; her children, Marsha L. Rohrer and Kathy H. Forde, both of Jacksonville, FL; Frank E. Halstead Sr. and his wife Maria of Houston, TX and Susan G. Tiedemann and her husband Mark of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nora F. Kemmerer (Bryce) of Virginia Beach, VA; Frank E. Halstead Jr. (Linda) of Houston, TX; Michael N. Forde of Clermont, FL; Audrey M. Halstead of Houston, TX; Elizabeth G. Tiedemann of Chesapeake, VA; Kathryn M. Halstead of Houston, TX and Steven M. Tiedemann of Chesapeake, VA. She was blessed with one great-granddaughter, Olivia G. Halstead of Houston, TX. She is also survived by two siblings; John T. Howell of Gurley, AL and Ruth S. Gilbert of Burlington, VT.
Audrey's funeral service will be held on Saturday October 25, 2014 at 2 p.m. in Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St. Portsmouth, VA 23704. Visitation will take place for one hour prior to the service. A private burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA.
Audrey was known for her loving and giving spirit, always putting others before herself. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Audrey by donating to the Alzheimer's Association, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or another charity of your choice.
