Obituary

PORTSMOUTH-- A kind, loving soul, was born June 3, 1940 and passed on to her next journey May 19, 2021, only days after her diagnosis with cancer.  She follows her parents Evelyn and Lynnwood Cherry and her son Gregory.  Her aunt Fay Leonard, who was like a sister, followed her May 24.  She is survived by her husband Maury; her son Maury, Jr. and wife Jenny; her grandkids Bella and Finn; and a niece, Angel Hoffman.

A partnership was formed between Audrey and Maury 55 years ago, and through many challenges and heartbreak, Audrey's strength and wisdom and core love of family allowed the space and time for their relationship to transform into one with a deeper foundation of love and respect.

Her life was a symphony of love.  She was gentle and compassionate for all living things; an artist with an adventurous spirit and grounded by nature, she helped others see the value and beauty in the smallest of things.

She made the world a better place, especially her hometown of Portsmouth, VA and her adopted homes of Duck and Point Harbor, NC.

She loved her job at WAVY TV for many years, and all of the friends she made there.  Some of her last words mentioned how much she loved everyone she went to school with.

A courageous spirit led her to many great adventures.  She camped over alligators and helped her husband and fellow explorer to navigate by canoe through the Everglades.  There were many self-supported bike-touring trips, including her first, after meeting her son Maury in Perth, Australia and exploring for 5 weeks, followed by trips cycling through Texas, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Arizona, where native Americans helped them better understand the tribe's land and people.  She explored many parts of Africa with an amazing group of friends and loved listening to the lions roar around their camp at night.  She connected with the people of India, as well as the cows, monkeys, dogs, donkeys and other animals she was with there.   Even with all of these, and many smaller adventures too numerous to mention, some of her favorite memories were of her contagiously fun trips to New York City and Florida with "THE GIRLS," a group of lifelong friends from high school.

Her peaceful presence helped others feel comfortable with who they are, and her spirit will continue to spread through the world in the kindness and compassion she taught as she lived her life for the benefit of others.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. Donations can be made to The Nature Conservancy. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.

We have created a Memorial Slideshow. The video will come up first, and if you exit out of the video, the individual pictures are available for download.  The pictures show her spirit and how lucky we are to have been a part of her life.
