Obituary

Annemarie Pischnotte passed away Monday morning, September 20, 2021 from Alzheimer's Disease and Covid-19. She rejoins William, her husband of 58 years, who died in 2012, her parents, and her sister, Ursula Sullivan.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and was the first child of Anna E. Devanney Steiding and Walter T. Steiding (both deceased).

She is survived by her three children – Eva Pischnotte McGuigan, husband Tom (Atlanta, GA), William Walter Pischnotte, wife Emily (Wichita, KS), and Paula Pischnotte Lassiter, husband Steve (Bunker Hill, WV); 8 grandchildren – Colin McGuigan, Maura McGuigan Bennett, Adam Lassiter, Zebulon Pischnotte, Zachary Pischnotte, Elaine Pischnotte Gavagan, Micah Pischnotte, and Jared Louviere; and 8 great-grandchildren, a niece, a nephew, and an extensive collection of friends and colleagues she met during her 89 years of life.

She attended Hunter College in NYC, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree while majoring in education with a minor in Spanish. After teaching 6th grade for one year in the Hicksville Public School System, she married William Otto Pischnotte, who had recently joined the U.S. Navy Medical Corps as a radiologist. Annemarie and her children accompanied her husband during his 21 year military career to posts in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Queens, NY, Pensacola, FL, and Portsmouth, VA.

Annemarie moved to Martinsburg, WV, with her husband after he retired from the Navy Medical Corps, where he spent 4 years as the radiologist at King's Daughters Hospital. They later moved back to the Tidewater area and lived in Chesapeake and Portsmouth. After her husband's death, she moved to Spring Arbor Assisted Living Winchester, VA, to be closer to her daughter, Paula.

Throughout her life, Annemarie enjoyed teaching, pursued a Masters Degree in Education from Shepherd's College, was active in the local Officers' Wives Clubs & local Garden Clubs.  She volunteered at local museums and churches, and broadened her horizons by reading. She was also a dedicated writer of letters, spending hours each day communicating with friends and family worldwide. For many years, she assisted her husband with fundraising events for Portsmouth Community Concert. They were frequently involved in the Arts Community in Tidewater, supporting the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Opera.

Annemarie and her late husband were able to travel extensively. She especially enjoyed their trips to the Mediterranean, including Rome, Vatican City, and the Holy Land. Other trips took them to visit family and friends flung far and wide across the United States and Europe.

Her most recent spiritual home was the Church of St. Therese (Catholic) in Chesapeake, VA.

We welcome anyone wishing to pay their respects there on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the Liturgy of the Resurrection to follow at 11 a.m.

Interment will be at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road in Suffolk, VA, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice. A donation to the Alzheimer's Association would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

Annemarie's children encourage everyone to get vaccinated and wear a mask, especially when you are around our fragile senior citizens. Even though Annemarie was fully vaccinated against Covid, she suffered a break-through infection.
