Anne Eller Johnson, born December 18, 1921 in Portsmouth to the late Helen Sirian and James Edward Eller, Sr., died on March 25, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, A.W. Johnson, Jr. and a brother, Harry Joseph Eller.
Anne spent most of her life in Portsmouth and Churchland, Virginia, and in Southern Shores, North Carolina. Growing up in Portsmouth, she graduated valedictorian of her class at St. Joseph's Academy and from Kee's Business College. After their marriage in 1941, Anne and A.W. built and operated a general store, Johnson's, which became the heart of the village of Churchland, supporting many charitable causes in the community in the '50's and '60's. After retirement, the Johnsons spent most of their time at their home in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Anne worked with the United Way of Portsmouth and was a volunteer at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. An avid golfer, she was active in the Ladies' Golf associations of Elizabeth Manor, Cedar Point, and Duck Woods Golf Clubs.
Anne Johnson is survived by daughters Barbara Johnson of New York City and Patricia Orgain and husband Frank of Chesapeake; nephew, G. Corby Johnson and wife Frances; grandchildren, Jennie O. Every and husband Mark of Glen Allen, Ashley O. Morgan and husband Brad of Norfolk, and F. Leigh Orgain of Virginia Beach; six great-grandchildren, Cora, Garrett and Wade Every, and Zeb, Frank and Eve Morgan; brother, J. Edward Eller and wife, Teresa of Virginia Beach and their four children; and nephew, Harry J. Eller, Jr. of Suffolk.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 30th at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Burial will follow at the Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive guests in the adjacent church social hall afterwards. Visitation will be Sunday, March 29th, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
