Obituary

Anne Boyce Eastes, 101, passed away April 7, 2026, at home in the Harmony Independent Living apartments in Suffolk, VA.  Anne was born March 17,1925, the youngest of nine children, in Woodland, North Carolina to the loving home of the late Annie Vincent Boyce and James Elwood Boyce.

Anne graduated from the Woodland-Olney High School. An outstanding basketball player, she was voted most athletic of her high school class. Anne Boyce married George Eastes of Portsmouth, Virginia on March 6, 1943. In the midst of World War II, Anne and George started their married years among military bases in North Carolina and El Paso, Texas.  Their first child was born in June of 1944 in El Paso. Anne returned to family in North Carolina when George shipped off to the Pacific theater late in the war.

After the war, they returned to make their home in Portsmouth.  Anne was active as a wife, mother, volunteer, friend and partner in civic and family business endeavors over the years.  Together Anne and George were inseparable. They  raised five daughters and seven grandchildren, who remember her as a strong and kind force in the lives of family and friends.

Anne was all about her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, actively engaging in everyone's lives until the very end. She was the glue that kept her immediate and extended family and friends connected over many years. Loved by aunts, uncles, and cousins on all sides, plus the members of close family friends, you would find her on the phone or visiting with family most days.

Anne volunteered at Portsmouth General Hospital for many years. She actively supported George's career in the National Guard and his service on the Portsmouth City Council. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

Known as an amazing self-taught cook, she also enjoyed gardening, travelling, and playing bridge with friends. She spent retirement years with George attending antique and gun shows. Antiquing was a special love of hers. Together they filled their home with well-loved and used antiques. In later years, Anne was an active reader and sports fan, rooting especially for North Carolina and Virginia basketball teams.

Anne was predeceased in 2010 by her husband, George Delman Eastes. She is survived by her five daughters, Susan Goode (Jim Rinehart), Kathy Gladfelter (Phil), Amy Dodd (Greg), Sally James (Scott) and Jane Eastes (Jim Bergquist) and "sixth" daughter Judy Williams (Delores Biggers); seven grandchildren, David Goode (Injae) , Gretchen Goode (Aaron Amoth), Kimberly Gladfelter, Brad Gladfelter, Celia Dodd (Kris Kratchen),  Justin James (Joanne), Jeremy James (Tricia) ; and seventeen great-grandchildren, Chase Goode, Rachel Goode, Asa Graham, Isa Graham, Autumn Alexander, Garret Gladfelter, Abi Gladfelter, Olivia Amoth, Isabella Amoth, Hunter Amoth, Keller Kratchen, Levi Kratchen, Cyanea James, Ariana James, Samantha James, Spencer James and Oliver James.
