Obituary

Anne Scott Carr How passed away on March 23, 2015 at her home in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Lillian Allen Scott and Mulford Kellam Scott (Scotty).
As a child, Anne's father regularly took her boating which developed her special love for and interest in the Elizabeth River. Anne was born with a natural love of music and song, a passion that lasted her lifetime. Her interests in the arts expanded beyond music to fine paintings and gardening. However, her greatest joy came from her family and multiple friends, all of whom she loved to entertain and encourage in their endeavors.
Anne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and led the debutant procession at the Portsmouth Woman's Club. She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, the Portsmouth Junior Woman's Club, the Portsmouth Service League, and the Elizabeth River Garden Club. Anne was a King's Daughters Hospital volunteer. She enjoyed playing bridge and mahjong with her many friends. Being an avid gardener, she spent many hours beautifying her yard. Although she liked to travel, she was always eager to return to her favorite place, Portsmouth.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Hopkins Carr, Jr., a well-known Portsmouth Internist. For many years, Anne enjoyed working with George at his office. Anne and George were known for their hospitality. Their much anticipated annual Christmas Party was their gift to friends and family during this special season. At George's death, Anne found strength and comfort in the loving, caring support of the Carr Family.
For the past eighteen years Anne has been happily married to Capt. Archibald How, II (Barry), U.S. Coast Guard retired. Barry is also a retired associate college professor, York College, Pa. Anne and Barry enjoyed traveling, entertaining, and dining out. Anne had three step-children Steven Porter How of Fort Lauderdale, FL, William Barwell How (deceased) and his wife Nancy of Acton, MA, and Susan Louise How Scurria and husband Norman of Elizabeth City, NC. There are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Anne, an only child, had great love for her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She thought of her cousins as siblings. She is remembered by them for her generous, loving heart.
Anne was blessed to have many friends and loved them as family. During her illness and her lifetime she cherished their frequent and heartwarming expressions of love and affection.
The family thanks Seniorcorp In-Home Care, Bon Secours Hospice, Edna Addison, and primary care physician, Dr. Terry Yarbrough for the superb end of life care provided.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Monumental United Methodist Church by The Rev. Joseph Cailles. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with a reception to follow at the church. Arrangements by B.W. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth.
