Portsmouth, VA –Amos Raynor "Tart" Daniels, Jr., age 89, died Wednesday, April 20, 2022. He was born on December 9, 1932, to Amos Raynor Daniels, Sr. and Elizabeth Boggs Daniels, in Wanchese, NC.
Tart had a zest for life and an affinity for the sea. As a young man, he was the Captain of the commercial fishing vessel, Miss Flora. Upon graduation from Manteo High School, he served 27 years in the United States Coast Guard, retiring as Lieutenant. He served 20 years as Captain in United States Merchant Marines; he held a Harbor Pilot License with unlimited tonnage; and he retired as Captain from Moran Towing. He was a member of the USCG Warrant Officers Club, USCG Officers Club, and the Seafarers International Union, AFL-CIO.
He was an active volunteer at Church of the Resurrection and in the community, where he quietly helped those in need. He volunteered at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth for 16 years. He was an avid golfer, volunteering at both Bide-A-Wee and Portsmouth Golf courses for 16 years. He was a former member of Manteo Masonic Lodge 521, A.F. & A.M. Tart enjoyed fishing, boating, walking, days on the beach, dining with friends, and spending time with his family.
He was the widower of Carol Mae Daniels, his wife of sixty-one years; and was predeceased by his parents; his brother, John William Daniels; his sister, Flora Macon Daniels Webber; and a niece, Karla Daniels Farquharson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 5 years, Lu Daniels; his three daughters, Charlene Daniels Sheets, Cathy Daniels Peters and husband Mark, and Cynthia Daniels Gray and husband Hunter; six grandchildren, Heather Sheets, Courtney Roberts and husband Matthew, Kelly Sheets, Patrick Gray and wife Carly, Chelsea Siekpa and husband Aaron, and Matthew Peters; six great-grandchildren, Ava, Tzipora, and Circe Roberts, Bennett and Wyatt Gray, and Holliday Siepka; as well as four nephews, five nieces, and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA, 23703. There will be visitation one hour prior to the Mass. A burial service with military honors will be conducted 3:00 p.m. at the Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese, NC, 27981.
Amos was quick with a smile and a helping hand. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Oasis Social Ministry .
