Obituary

Allan Vincent John Whitney, 84, of Lake Prince Woods, Suffolk, VA, passed away November 16, 2013 in his home.

After serving in the Air Force as an electronic armament systems gunner on a B-45 jet bomber, Mr. Whitney, a native of San Francisco, Calif., graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and the University of Wisconsin with a MS in soils. He retired in 1985 from the Royster Company as vice president of marketing services, after many years of faithful service. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, Va. and worked tirelessly for many local charitable organizations including Oasis Social Ministry, Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless, and the Portsmouth Humane Society.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Avis Whitney; two children, Terrell Dorn and his wife Beth of Fredericksburg, Va., Rebecca Dorn Ladiser and her husband Shann of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Chris, Sr., Matthew, Jason and Elizabeth; six great-grandchildren, Chris, Jr., Shawn, David, Nathan, Brady and Hudson; one great-great-grandchild, Braydan; and three sisters, Catherine Lytle, Abby Dawson and Elizabeth Whitney.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 22, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 500 Court St., Portsmouth, VA by The Rev. Kathleen M. Bobbitt. A reception will follow in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Oasis Social Ministry, 800 Williamsburg Ave., Portsmouth, VA 23704; Portsmouth Humane Society,4022 Seaboard Court, Portsmouth, VA 23701; or to a charity of choice.
