SUFFOLK- Albert James Moberg passed away on May 3, 2019 in Suffolk, Virginia. He was born in Hampton, Virginia on March 2, 1930 to Eldon Samuel and Pauline Alberti Moberg.
Al graduated from Hampton High School in 1947, and from VPI ( Virginia Tech) in 1951. In 1951 he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Randolph Vinieratos, also of Hampton. He was commissioned as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the US Army, and served as an artillery officer in Japan and South Korea during the Korean War. After completing his military service, Al worked as a metallurgist with Union Carbide until 1960 in Ashtabula, Ohio and Florence, Alabama. While in Ashtabula, Betsy and he had two children, James Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Houpos.
In 1960, Al joined Newport News Shipbuilding as a metallurgist and moved his family back to Hampton, Virginia. During his 31 years with the shipyard, Al progressed into supervision and became Manager of the Laboratories, a position he held admirably for many years. Al and Betsy were founding members of Northampton Presbyterian Church in 1960, where Al served as a deacon, an elder and as a choir member. Al was active in the startup of the crisis hotline Contact Peninsula, where he was a longtime volunteer overnight crisis counselor. In 1991, he lost his loving wife Betsy to cancer, and he retired from the Shipyard in 1992.
After retirement, Al married Sydnor (Syd) J. Hutcheson and moved to Blacksburg, Virginia and subsequently to the Sunnyside retirement community in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Al enjoyed golf, playing bridge and visiting with family and friends. After the loss of Syd in 2015, Al moved to Suffolk, Virginia.
Al was predeceased by his mother and father; his first wife Betsy; brothers Eldon Samuel (Sam) Moberg ,Jr. and Robert Earle Moberg; his sister Marguerite (Sid) Moberg Turner; and his second wife Syd. He is survived by his son Jimmy Moberg (Sharoyn) and his daughter Libby Houpos (George); his brother Paul Edward Moberg(Kaye); his grandchildren, Rev. Andreas George Houpos (Meredyth), Jesse Eldon Moberg (Diana), Elizabeth Houpos Raby (Shane), and Adrienne Beth Moberg; his step-grandson Jesse Hutcheson; and his great-grandchildren, Joshua Albert Moberg, Alyssa Shane Raby, and Kathryn Elizabeth Moberg.
Al's family greatly appreciates the kind and attentive care provided by the staff of Harmony at Harbour View and Interim Hospice.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Green Acres Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, Al's family encourages that donations be made to the Albert and Sydnor Moberg Endowed Scholarship at Christopher Newport University, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News, VA 23606.
